Guide to leather finishes for premium footwear

Aniline, semi-aniline, pigmented, embossed: when to choose each and why.
The finish defines how leather looks, feels and ages. This quick guide helps product teams choose the right finish family according to use and brand positioning.
Aniline
Transparent dye with no pigment layer. Maximum natural character and depth of colour, but lower stain resistance. Ideal for premium products where the patina developed through use is valued.
Semi-anilina
Aniline with a very thin pigment layer. Retains a natural handle while improving uniformity and resistance. It is the most widely used balance in premium footwear and high-end leather goods.
Pigmented
Visible pigment layer. Maximum colour consistency and resistance, with less visual depth. Suitable for consistent industrial production or highly saturated colours.
Embossing and effects
Embossing (palmellato, saffiano, scales) or pull-up, waxed, vintage effects can be applied over any base finish. Each alters the handle, sheen and behaviour when folded. Always request a physical sample before finalising a collection.
