A technical and commercial checklist for evaluating tanneries without taking on hidden risks.

Choosing a tannery is not just about price per square foot. It is about traceability, batch consistency, technical responsiveness and industrial reliability over 3-5 years. This guide summarises the checklist used by the most demanding purchasing teams.

    Technical checklist

    • Current LWG certification (ideally Gold)
    • Actual monthly capacity and percentage available for new customers
    • Colour consistency between batches (ΔE ≤ 1,0 desirable)
    • Standard and custom sample lead times
    • Minimum order and replenishment policy

    Commercial checklist

    • Company track record and longevity of active customer references
    • Geographical coverage and international logistics
    • Custom development capabilities (colour, finish, handle)
    • Dedicated technical team for premium accounts

    Red flags

Be wary of suppliers who do not provide detailed technical data sheets, do not allow tannery visits or do not document the origin of their hides. A lack of sourcing transparency is the first indicator of future regulatory problems.
